24 local artists and architects were asked to take a stock chair and personalize it to be auctioned at a fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. My entry took a humourous approach transforming the iconic Navy chair into a wall-mounted piece called:
“You’re So Busted”
Emeco’s 1944 design of the Navy Chair is pure, essential, and iconic; there is absolutely nothing extra. It is lightweight, durable, comfortable, and constructed entirely of 100% recyclable aluminum, making this chair quite “green,” and way ahead of its time. To honor the chair’s exceptional hard working design, it seemed appropriate to offer it a break by displaying it on the wall. The chair, deconstructed (busted) and reassembled becomes quite anthropomorphic, as if it wants to hug other parts of your body than just your bottom. The assemblage also has a very humorous posture as if it was just caught doing something it wasn’t supposed to-busted!
